Lets look at the facts.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"sky-component-story-article__intro\"><a href=\"http:\/\/suneuropeanpartners.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sun European<\/a>, a private equity firm &#8220;<em>that invests in troubled businesses&#8221;<\/em> acquired Hewden for\u00a0\u00a3110m in 2010.<\/li>\n<li class=\"sky-component-story-article__intro\">A string of bad years that included losses of \u00a313m in 2013, \u00a312m in 2012, \u00a33.9m in 2011 and nearly \u00a314m in 2010.<\/li>\n<li class=\"sky-component-story-article__intro\">In 2014, Hewden lost\u00a0\u00a316.6m on sales of \u00a3105.9m\u00a0and forked out \u00a38.9m in interest payments.<\/li>\n<li class=\"sky-component-story-article__intro\">In 2015, then new CEO Adrian Murphy said: \u201cwe invested \u00a360 million (\u20ac83 million) in 2014 and will probably invest another \u00a350 million (\u20ac69 million) in 2015.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li class=\"sky-component-story-article__intro\">In 2016, Hewden invested \u00a325 million (\u20ac32 million) on SDMO generators; Firefly Hybrid generators; JCB skid steer and tracked loaders; <a href=\"http:\/\/minutes.machine.market\/index.php\/2016\/04\/22\/30-new-terex-genie-gth-2506-compact-telehandlers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Genie telehandlers<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/minutes.machine.market\/index.php\/2016\/07\/22\/11-5m-investment-for-uk-crane-hire-firm-hewden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tadano cranes<\/a>. New faces, news products and a new approach has strengthened the company\u2019s on-site solutions.&#8221;<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"sky-component-story-article__intro\">Remember Brexit happened less than five months ago. \u00a0Should Hewden fail, the years of borrowing money, servicing debt and rapidly expanding into new rental equipment markets are the real causes of Hewden&#8217;s \u00a3190 plus deficit. \u00a0<strong>NOT Brexit <\/strong>as<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/brexit-to-blame-as-machinery-rental-firm-hewden-nears-collapse-10662882\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SkyNews<\/a>\u00a0headline would like you to believe&#8230;<\/p>\n<h1 class=\"sky-component-story-article-header__headline sky-component-story-article-header__headline--breaking\">&#8216;Brexit to blame&#8217; as machinery rental firm Hewden nears collapse<\/h1>\n<p class=\"sky-component-story-article-header__standfirst\">The equipment rental firm, which says Brexit has &#8220;adversely affected&#8221; it, has lined up <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ey.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EY<\/a> as administrator, Sky News learns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sky-component-story-article-header__standfirst\">Hundreds of jobs are at risk this weekend as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hewden.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hewden<\/a>, one of the UK\u2019s biggest heavy machinery rental firms, teeters on the brink of collapse following a sharp deterioration in trading conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Sky News has learnt that Hewden&#8217;s owner has lined up the professional services firm EY to act as administrator to the Manchester-based company.<\/p>\n<p>An announcement is expected to be made about EY&#8217;s appointment in the early part of next week, according to insiders.<\/p>\n<p>Hewden&#8217;s failure, which would come after a frantic search for new financial backers in recent weeks, will fuel the debate about the impact of the EU referendum result on British industry.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement last month, the company, which was established in 1961 and employs around\u00a0750 people, said it was confident that it could find new investors.<\/p>\n<p>Sources said, however, that talks with possible backers including Alchemy Partners had so far proved fruitless.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Hewden has been impacted by market uncertainty following the vote to leave the EU. The vote has adversely affected a number of large construction and capital investment projects,&#8221; Hewden said three weeks ago.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"sky-component-story-article__body\">\n<p>&#8220;The company is in constructive dialogue with stakeholders to resolve the situation in a consensual manner and is optimistic that a positive solution will be found.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The company is working with its advisers Deloitte to reach agreement with lenders on an extension of its debt facilities, whilst also testing market appetite for a sale of the business.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Hewden rents machinery such as cranes, excavators and power generation tools to construction sites across the UK.<\/p>\n<p>Among the brands it supplies to customers is machinery made by JCB, which has been a vocal supporter of the UK&#8217;s departure from the European Union.<\/p>\n<p>JCB resigned its membership of the pro-EU CBI this year because of their divergent opinions about the issue, and recently hailed a <a href=\"http:\/\/minutes.machine.market\/index.php\/2016\/11\/09\/jcb-scoops-up-35-million-deal-to-supply-1200-machines-to-firm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a335m order for 1,200 machines from A-Plant Hire.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hewden was bought by the investment firm Sun Capital Partners in 2010, it lost more than \u00a316m in 2014 &#8211; the last year for which accounts are available at Companies House.<\/p>\n<p>Sources said this weekend said there was still some hope that a solvent solution could yet be found for the business, or that a buyer may be found after it enters administration.<\/p>\n<p>Hewden&#8217;s defined benefit pension scheme is in the middle of a triennial valuation, with one insider saying it was &#8220;inevitable&#8221; that a previous surplus would now have turned into a deficit.<\/p>\n<p>The Pension Protection Fund, an industry-funded lifeboat, is understood to have been placed on alert to absorb the Hewden scheme.<\/p>\n<p>Hewden could not be reached for comment, while Sun Capital Partners, EY and Deloitte all declined to comment.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/minutes.machine.market\/index.php\/2016\/11\/22\/a-plant-acquires-three-divisions-of-hewden-for-29m-as-rental-giant-goes-into-administration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Update<\/strong> &#8211; A-Plant acquires three divisions of Hewden for \u00a329m as rental giant goes into administration<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"sky-component-story-article__intro\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2016\/10\/29\/cash-squeeze-and-debts-force-hewden-to-hunt-for-new-backers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cash squeeze and debts force Hewden to hunt for new backers<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SkyNews\u00a0headline blames Brexit for Hewden&#8217;s impending collapse.
