{"id":835,"date":"2016-04-19T14:50:33","date_gmt":"2016-04-19T14:50:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/minutes.machine.market\/?p=835"},"modified":"2016-04-19T14:50:33","modified_gmt":"2016-04-19T14:50:33","slug":"streets-in-downtown-calgary-reopen-after-glass-falls-from-33-floor-of-construction-site","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/machine.market\/blog\/streets-in-downtown-calgary-reopen-after-glass-falls-from-33-floor-of-construction-site\/","title":{"rendered":"Streets in downtown Calgary reopen after glass falls from 33 floor of construction site"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CALGARY \u2013 Several streets in downtown Calgary which were shut down on Monday due to falling glass have been reopened.<\/p>\n<p>Emergency crews were called to the Brookfield Place construction site on the corner of 6 Avenue and 1 Street S.W. at around 4 p.m. on Monday after glass from a window on the 33 floor fell to the street below.<\/p>\n<div class=\"gn-embed-wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/globalnews.ca\/video\/embed\/2647701\/\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Police told Global News the glass was broken by a crane which swayed and hit the tower.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the glass landed on a vehicle driving by, but according to the City of Calgary no one was injured.<\/p>\n<p>Winds in the downtown core were too high for crews to safely scale the building and secure the glass.<\/p>\n<p>As such, police closed 6 Avenue between Centre Street and 2 Street S.W. and 1 Street S.W. between 8 Avenue and 5 Avenue S.W. as a precaution. The closure severely impacted rush hour traffic in the area.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-photo article-photo-inline photoCaptionWrapper\">\n<div data-picture=\"\" data-class=\"story-img\" data-alt=\"Glass Calgary Monday\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe area is safe at this time and we have reopened all the roads,\u201d Acting Battalion Chief Paul LeBlanc said.<\/p>\n<p>An investigation into the incident is underway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPart of that investigation is how do you prevent that from happening in the future,\u201d\u00a0<span class=\"st\">Carol Henke<\/span> with the Calgary Fire Department said. \u201cThen changes are made accordingly.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-photo article-photo-inline photoCaptionWrapper\">\n<div data-picture=\"\" data-class=\"story-img\" data-alt=\"Glass Calgary Monday\">\n<div style=\"width: 730px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/shawglobalnews.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/04\/glassmondayph.jpg?quality=70&amp;strip=all&amp;w=720&amp;h=800&amp;crop=1\" alt=\"Glass Calgary Monday\" width=\"720\" height=\"800\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">An area was taped off as police assured people there was no risk of any further glass falling downtown.
