hey’d be easy to miss in the inventory list for the upcoming Ritchie Brothers’ equipment auction in Edmonton\u00a0\u2014\u00a0which is heavy on heavy equipment (thousands of trucks, trailers, hydraulic excavators)\u00a0\u2014 but the two items are definitely\u00a0odd.<\/p>\n

Each consists of a few dozen mining claims deep in Yukon’s\u00a0Klondike region.<\/p>\n

“It is an unusual sale,” said Marcel Dulac of Dulac Mining, the company that now owns the claims. 104 are going up for sale\u00a0\u2014 one lot of 53, and one lot of 51.<\/p>\n

“We had 242 claims, so it was a bit too big of a holdings for us to manage all of the assessment work.”<\/p>\n

The annual\u00a0auction in Edmonton is a big deal.\u00a0Last year’s event\u00a0saw about 14,000 bidders from 55 countries bid on about 7,700 items.<\/p>\n

The auction listing offers directions to the claims: ‘From Dawson City, YT go 42 miles upstream to 60 Mile River, then 13 miles upstream to 13 Mile Creek.’<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It’s\u00a0a major clearinghouse for mining and construction equipment, and the number of items for sale this year\u00a0\u2014 a record 10,300\u00a0\u2014 offer a good illustration of Alberta’s current troubles. There’s a lot of unused equipment, looking for work.<\/p>\n

Dulac believes that means it’s a good time to try to sell his unwanted Yukon claims.<\/p>\n

“A\u00a0lot of these private entrepreneurs are looking to other types of businesses to continue doing business.\u00a0A\u00a0lot of eyes have turned towards placer mining,” he said.<\/p>\n

“So the interest is quite high.”<\/p>\n

Still, the auction is a bit of a gamble for\u00a0Dulac. He\u00a0has no idea what his\u00a0claims might fetch.<\/p>\n

“It’s an unreserved auction, so prices could go for five\u00a0dollars per claim, all the way up to several thousand dollars per claim. But I wouldn’t want to take a guess, it’s still an auction.”<\/p>\n

The auction happens in Edmonton over 5 days, April 26 to 30.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
