Revenue and profits at the Kerry-based arm of Swiss crane manufacturer Liebherr soared last year, with demand prompting the division to boost its workforce to more than 840 people.<\/p>\n

Sales at the Liebherr Container Cranes Ltd.<\/a> Irish unit jumped 27pc to \u20ac325m, while operating profits almost doubled to \u20ac17m.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Container cranes made in Killarney by Liebherr are used in more than 100 ports around the world.<\/p>\n

Liebherr Container Cranes Ltd. develops, produces, transports, and assembles machinery for port handling.<\/p>\n

    But despite the surge in operating profits, the unit’s bottom line declined, with pre-tax profits falling from \u20ac6.6m to \u20ac3.8m.<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n

    That fall was due to losses on foreign exchange movements during the year. Liebherr noted that its business strategy is strongly influenced by price developments of steel and components.<\/p>\n

    The accounts note that the Irish firm also paid a \u20ac5m dividend to its parent last year, down from \u20ac6.5m in 2014.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    Its turnover last year included \u20ac316.1m from the sale of cranes, \u20ac7.6m from the sale of spares and \u20ac1.3m from servicing and rework.<\/p>\n

    The accounts also show that crane sales revenue from the Middle East plunged last year to \u20ac25.7m from \u20ac63.4m in 2014.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    However, crane sales revenue from the Americas more than doubled from \u20ac63.3m to \u20ac129m.<\/p>\n

    In Europe, crane sales revenue jumped from \u20ac49.7m to \u20ac74.2m, while in Africa it rose sharply from \u20ac34.4m to \u20ac50.2m. Crane sales revenue in Oceania was flat at \u20ac36.7m.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    Given the nature of its product, the Irish subsidiary’s shipping costs are high.<\/p>\n

    Its freight bill climbed to \u20ac23.6m last year from \u20ac21.9m in 2014. Contractual penalties rose to \u20ac6.8m from \u20ac4m.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    At the end of 2015, the company employed 829 people – 100 more than at the end of 2014.<\/p>\n

    Its wage bill was \u20ac44.5m, compared to \u20ac37.9m in 2014.<\/p>\n

    The Liebherr family has become entrenched in Kerry. \u00a0Hans Liebherr built a guesthouse in Kerry in the 1950s to accommodate visitors to the new factory in Killarney.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
