Mammoet<\/a> successfully concluded the transportation of the four legs of the New York Wheel. The legs were fabricated in Italy by manufacturer Walter Tosto and arrived safely at South Brooklyn Marine Terminal on Monday. The New York Wheel, an initiative of the New York Wheel Company, is being constructed near the northern tip of Staten Island, about 35 meters from the shores of New York Harbor. Once construction has been completed, it will be the world\u2019s tallest observation wheel at 192 m (629 ft.)<\/p>\n

Milestone<\/strong>
\n<\/b>The arrival of the legs – a milestone in the construction project – was marked with a celebration. They are the first New York wheel components to arrive that will be installed above ground. Included amongst the guests were Rich Marin, President of the New York Wheel Company, Maria Torres-Springer, President, NYC Economic Development Corp and several city council members.<\/p>\n

The legs
\n<\/b>The shipment that arrived on Monday consists of four legs, which each weigh more than 500 tons. They are 5.4 meters (18-feet) wide and will be 83 meters (275 feet) tall when erected. Each leg is made up of two parts, of 42 and 41 meters respectively. Once installed, the legs will provide support for the wheel and will be topped with a brace hub and spindle.<\/p>\n

Wheel construction
\n<\/b>The construction and transport of the wheel components will be coordinated by Mammoet USA. Mammoet USA will engineer the multiple erection procedures, procure all the necessary parts from all over the world and construct the entire wheel. The legs will be installed using Mammoet cranes and Mammoet Self Propelled Modular Transporters (SPMTs). In total the company will be erecting 10,000 tons of steel.<\/p>\n

Joint venture
\n<\/strong>Mammoet Starneth LLC is responsible for Engineering, Procurement and Construction of the New York Wheel. Mammoet have formed a joint venture with Starneth LLC, a Dutch engineering company specialized in the design and construction of giant observation wheels and structures.<\/p>\n

Mammoet
\n<\/b>Mammoet is the world\u2019s largest service provider specializing in engineered heavy lifting and transport. The New York Wheel will be yet another example of Mammoet\u2019s work on iconic city structures across the globe.
