{"id":7193,"date":"2016-09-28T15:10:14","date_gmt":"2016-09-28T15:10:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/minutes.machine.market\/?p=7193"},"modified":"2016-09-28T15:10:14","modified_gmt":"2016-09-28T15:10:14","slug":"230-million-kiewit-led-hwy-53-bridge-relocation-project-reaches-halfway-point","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/machine.market\/blog\/230-million-kiewit-led-hwy-53-bridge-relocation-project-reaches-halfway-point\/","title":{"rendered":"Watch video of the $230 million Kiewit project reach a milestone, the setting of 375t bridge girders with a 1375-ton crawler crane in MN"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"subscriber-preview\">\n<p><strong>VIRGINIA, MN<\/strong>\u2014 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dot.state.mn.us\/d1\/projects\/hwy53relocation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Highway 53 bridge and relocation project<\/a> hit a milestone Sept. 23 when it reached the halfway point.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-preview\">\n<p>The $230 million project that began last November, with the bridge and roadway scheduled to open to traffic in November of next year, is now 50 percent complete, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>And some other big \u2014 seriously big \u2014 things have been happening with the project this month.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"tncms-region-article_instory_top\" class=\"tncms-region \">\u00a0The first of the bridge\u2019s massive steel girders that will support the roadway and pedestrian walkway was placed Sept. 13. \u00a0The project\u2019s 80 girders, fabricated by a company in Eau Claire, Wis., are up to 16 feet tall and 120 feet long. They will account for 10 million pounds of the American-made steel used in the bridge that will span the Rouchleau Pit.<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>It takes massive equipment to install girders on what will be Minnesota\u2019s tallest bridge \u2014 rising 200 feet above water level.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>And the project, overseen by general contractor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kiewit.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kiewit Infrastructure Co.<\/a>, has brought in the right crane to tackle the job \u2014 the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sarens.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sarens<\/a> owned heavy-lift crawler crane, known as the 1375-ton (US) capacity <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sarens.com\/media\/catalog\/Demag%20CC6800\/CC-6800_A1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Terex CC 6800<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/q2-bsrLrQpM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>The remainder of the girders will be delivered during the next few months, with installation continuing into the winter.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>Work also continues on the bridge\u2019s concrete east abutment, as well as on Pier 1, the eastern column.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.virginiamn.com\/news\/highway-project-at-halfway-point\/article_97acf84a-8533-11e6-a3ff-b7658e0e0db3.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mesabi Daily News<\/a> reports, roadway crews have finished installing water, storm sewer and sanitary sewer systems between Highway 135 and the bridge. They are also still building the base and embankments for much of the new Highway 53 alignment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"tncms-region-article_instory_middle\" class=\"tncms-region \">And workers are constructing the pier and the abutments for a bridge that will carry Highway 135 over Highway 53 on the south end of the project.<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>Crews continue the reconstruction of southbound Highway 53 from Vermillion Drive to the eastbound ramp to Highway 135. There is one lane of traffic in each direction while the southbound roadway is rebuilt, which will take about another month, according to MnDOT.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>During the next several weeks, crews will begin to pave portions from Midway Road to Highway 53. Next year, work will launch to rebuild the northbound side of Highway 53 in that area.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>Project officials urge motorists to use the zipper merge to minimize backups near the work zone.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>MnDOT built the original roadway in 1960 on land owned by iron mining interests. The easement the agency signed in order to build the highway included a requirement that MnDOT would move the road with three years notice if the mining company needed to get to the ore underneath.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>In 2010, Cliffs Natural Resources notified the department that the road had to be moved, and MnDOT and the mining company agreed to a 2017 completion date.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"list-inline\">\n<li>ANGIE RIEBE STAFF WRITER<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>VIRGINIA, MN\u2014 The Highway 53 bridge and relocation project hit a milestone Sept. 23 when it reached the halfway point.
