{"id":6959,"date":"2016-09-21T00:48:04","date_gmt":"2016-09-21T00:48:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/minutes.machine.market\/?p=6959"},"modified":"2016-09-21T00:48:04","modified_gmt":"2016-09-21T00:48:04","slug":"volvo-ce-unveils-futuristic-hybrid-wheel-loader-and-driverless-hauler-prototypes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/machine.market\/blog\/volvo-ce-unveils-futuristic-hybrid-wheel-loader-and-driverless-hauler-prototypes\/","title":{"rendered":"Volvo CE unveils futuristic hybrid wheel loader and driverless hauler prototypes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Volvo Construction Equipment (CE) has unveiled several futuristic equipment prototypes and innovations at its Xploration Forum in Eskilstuna, Sweden, including autonomous machines, a hybrid wheel loader that cuts fuel consumption by 50% and a radical electric quarry solution.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the first of three demonstrations, Jenny Elfsberg, director of emerging technologies at Volvo CE, unveiled a prototype autonomous L120 wheel loader that filled a prototype autonomous A25F articulated hauler \u2013 before dumping its load and repeating the cycle.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FRh2QZaVwoQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In tests at an asphalt plant in Sweden, the team has already found that the autonomous wheel loader can achieve productivity levels equivalent to 70% that of a skilled operator. Such developments have major implications for the Gulf, which suffers from a skills gap.<\/p>\n<p>Elfsberg noted: \u201cThe machines can perform the same task over and over again, along a fixed route, for a relatively long period of time. We are working on developing solutions that have the required safety and performance levels that the market will accept.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionweekonline.com\/article-40923-volvo-ce-unveils-futuristic-equipment-prototypes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Construction Week Online<\/a>, Volvo astonished visitors to <abbr class=\"glossarizer_project_replaced\" title=\"\" data-hasqtip=\"0\">the forum<\/abbr> when it presented the company\u2019s prototype electric hybrid wheel loader \u2013 a machine that can deliver up to a 50% improvement in fuel efficiency.<\/p>\n<p>The prototype hybrid wheel loader \u2013 known as the LX1 \u2013 achieves this with individual electric drive motors mounted directly at the wheels, electric hydraulics, an energy storage system, a significantly smaller diesel engine for recharging the battery.<\/p>\n<p>The prototype \u2013 which has 98% new parts and a fundamentally new machine design \u2013 is also capable of doing the work of a conventional wheel loader a category larger than itself and offers a significant reduction in both emissions and noise pollution compared to its conventional counterparts.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8FKPjannlRY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>However, perhaps the most dramatic of Volvo\u2019s reveals was its conceptual development of a quarry solution that incorporates its latest developments in both autonomy and electric drive, exemplified by its autonomous, battery-electric, driverless hauler, the HX1.<\/p>\n<p>In partnership with the Swedish Energy Agency, the electric site project aims to transform the quarry and aggregates industry by reducing carbon emissions by up to 95% and total cost of ownership by up to 25%.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis research project is a <abbr class=\"glossarizer_project_replaced\" title=\"\" data-hasqtip=\"1\">step<\/abbr> towards transforming the quarry and aggregates industry,\u201d said Johan Sj\u00f6berg, technical specialist in site automation at Volvo CE.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy using electricity instead of diesel to power construction equipment in a quarry we have the potential to deliver significant reductions in fuel consumption, CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions, environmental impact and cost-per-tonne.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin Weissburg, president of Volvo CE, added: \u201cWe are developing technologies connected to electromobility, intelligent machines and total site solutions that will benefit our customers and the environment and play an important part in building a sustainable society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>by\u00a0John Bambridge<\/p>\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Volvo Construction Equipment (CE) has unveiled several futuristic equipment prototypes and innovations at its Xploration Forum in Eskilstuna, Sweden, including autonomous machines, a hybrid wheel loader that cuts fuel consumption by 50% and a radical electric quarry solution.
