{"id":6701,"date":"2016-09-13T14:44:32","date_gmt":"2016-09-13T14:44:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/minutes.machine.market\/?p=6701"},"modified":"2016-09-13T14:44:32","modified_gmt":"2016-09-13T14:44:32","slug":"access-industrys-future-is-tied-to-leveraging-the-right-technologies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/machine.market\/blog\/access-industrys-future-is-tied-to-leveraging-the-right-technologies\/","title":{"rendered":"JLG STATES, ACCESS INDUSTRY\u2019S FUTURE IS TIED TO LEVERAGING THE RIGHT TECHNOLOGIES"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Addressing International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) Asia members during the <a class=\"externalLinkIcon\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ipaf.org\/en\/services\/asia-conference\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IPAF Asia Conference &amp; Showcase<\/a> July 20 in Singapore, Alan Loux, vice president \u2013 global marketing, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jlg.com\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">JLG Industries, Inc.<\/a>, tied the future of the access industry to identifying and leveraging the right technologies.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe long-term success of our industry relies on our ability to continuously improve upon the safe operation of our machines. Without question, technology is a great enabler of advanced safety solutions,\u201d Loux said during his keynote address, titled \u201cThe Future of the Access Industry is Now.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Loux\u2019s presence at the conference underscores JLG\u2019s commitment to meeting the growing demands for access equipment in Asia and other emerging markets. JLG, is a global <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jlg.com\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">manufacturer of aerial work platforms<\/a> and telescopic material handlers.<\/p>\n<p>In his opening remarks, Loux referenced technologies already in place to improve safety and reduce accidents, such as pothole protection systems, analog envelope control, automatic outrigger leveling, fall arrest, enhanced protection against involuntary operation, and load-sensing systems. He used the remainder of his address to look at newer technologies the industry is embracing to reduce accidents, injuries and fatalities.<\/p>\n<p>Loux encouraged the industry to push for the adoption and integration of several \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/minutes.machine.market\/index.php\/2016\/09\/13\/access-industrys-future-is-tied-to-leveraging-the-right-technologies\/\">near-term technologies<\/a>,\u201d including collision avoidance and detection, self-leveling and virtual reality.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are all sorts of possibilities for using emerging technologies in equipment and training programs,\u201d he said. \u201cBy placing our trainees in a virtual reality environment, we would give them a greater feel and a more natural experience for the work conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Loux went on to describe a number of \u201cclose-in technologies\u201d that have the potential to change the face of the access industry. For example, augmented reality and head-mounted displays could \u201cgive the operator access to a wealth of information regarding equipment operation, safety, or hazardous conditions, as well as a quick, easy-to-reference guide for typical job functions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Loux\u2019s list of close-in technologies also included wearables, the Internet of Things, and drones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if we placed sensors everywhere\u2014on vests, gloves, boots, and equipment\u2014including lift arms, attachments, and tires? We could also put sensors on welding equipment, the pallet on a telehandler, and the materials resting on the pallet. With all those sensors in place and providing data, we would create a complete view of the job envelope. They would allow us to gather a wealth of information that could be tracked and shared to enhance safety and productivity,\u201d Loux went on to say.<\/p>\n<p>He then turned his attention to \u201cfuture-looking technologies,\u201d including autonomous vehicle operation, robotics and big data, which would enable revolutionary technology, such as artificial intelligence and machine learning.<\/p>\n<p>Loux concluded his remarks by challenging his audience to, \u201cTalk with your fellow IPAF members, co-workers, vendors, customers, and others about how technology is revolutionizing our industry. Change the way you think about safety.
