{"id":5450,"date":"2016-08-04T13:48:58","date_gmt":"2016-08-04T13:48:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/minutes.machine.market\/?p=5450"},"modified":"2016-08-04T13:48:58","modified_gmt":"2016-08-04T13:48:58","slug":"5450-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/machine.market\/blog\/5450-2\/","title":{"rendered":"NJ construction company hit with $71K fine for crane hazards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A New Jersey construction company faces a proposed $71,400 fine and 29 federal citations for crane operation and chemical hazards, according to the U.S. Department of Labor&#8217;s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rcsrebar.com\/products.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RCS Construction LLC<\/a>\u00a0at was putting its\u00a0workers at risk of amputations and other serious injuries, the agency said in an announcement of\u00a0the July 29 citations.<\/p>\n<p>OSHA considers\u00a026\u00a0of the violations\u00a0to be\u00a0&#8220;serious.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The infractions\u00a0include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>hazards related to cranes<\/li>\n<li>workers exposed to dangerous chemicals, equipment hazards and electrical hazards<\/li>\n<li>obstructed exit routes and missing exit signs<\/li>\n<li>improper storage of propane fuel cylinders<\/li>\n<li>failure to create a hearing conservation program<\/li>\n<li>lack of machine guarding and forklift maintenance and training<\/li>\n<li>lack of a hazard communication program<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Regular inspections of cranes are a critical component of safe operation. Besides the hazards found related to the crane, OSHA cited many other violations at this worksite,&#8221; said Patricia Jones, director of OSHA&#8217;s Avenel Area office. &#8220;RCS\u00a0Construction must correct all of these hazards promptly to protect its workers from needless injuries or worse.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The inspections arose from a complaint delivered to OSHA in February and a subsequent referral from a compliance officer in April.<\/p>\n<p>The citations are available <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osha.gov\/ooc\/citations\/RCS_1124618.pdf\">here<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osha.gov\/ooc\/citations\/RCS_1137267.pdf\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>RCS Construction has 15 business days from the receipt of the\u00a0citations to comply, ask for a conference with OSHA&#8217;s\u00a0area director or contest the findings before an independent Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission.<\/p>\n<p>The company did not respond to a request for comment Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nj.com\/union\">MORE UNION COUNTY NEWS<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Marisa Iati may be reached at\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:miati@njadvancemedia.com\">miati@njadvancemedia.com<\/a>.
