{"id":5076,"date":"2016-07-19T13:57:03","date_gmt":"2016-07-19T13:57:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/minutes.machine.market\/?p=5076"},"modified":"2016-07-19T13:57:03","modified_gmt":"2016-07-19T13:57:03","slug":"komatsu-america-rounds-out-its-intelligent-excavator-and-dozer-families","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/machine.market\/blog\/komatsu-america-rounds-out-its-intelligent-excavator-and-dozer-families\/","title":{"rendered":"Komatsu America Rounds Out Its &#8220;Intelligent&#8221; Excavator and Dozer Families"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At the time it launched its first <a href=\"http:\/\/www.komatsuamerica.com\/innovation\/intelligent-machine-control\/why-intelligent-machine-control\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">intelligent Machine Control<\/a> dozer, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.komatsuamerica.com\/equipment\/dozers\/151-260hp\/d61pxi-23\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">D61i-23<\/a>, in 2013,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.komatsuamerica.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Komatsu America<\/a>\u00a0indicated the technology was scalable to other models and machine types. It\u2019s proven this out by introducing entire product families of dozers and excavators incorporating integrated 3D GNSS automation. All were on display at an event held in late May at the company\u2019s training center in Cartersville, GA, including recent additions to both families.<\/p>\n<p>Arguably the most significant additions are the\u00a0<a class=\"outbound_link_tracking\" href=\"file:\/\/\/D:\/Downloads\/PC360LCi-11.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PC360LCi-11<\/a>, which falls into the highly popular 36-metric-ton class, and the 49-metric-ton\u00a0<a class=\"outbound_link_tracking\" href=\"file:\/\/\/D:\/Downloads\/PC490LCi-11.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PC490LCi-11<\/a>. These units mark the entry of intelligent Machine Control into large, production-class excavator sizes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy adding 3D capabilities with smart automation, this signals a new era of big machines getting to grade faster,\u201d says Ron Schwieters, Komatsu product marketing manager. \u201cThey can grade the top edge, slope, trench&#8230; load trucks, shape and get to grade with no wasted time or movement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3ma4j5ZL-zI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>Building on Greater Acceptance<\/h3>\n<p>For <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forconstructionpros.com\/article\/12222105\/komatsu-america-rounds-out-its-intelligent-excavator-and-dozer-families\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Construction Pros<\/a> reports, as a whole, more contractors are embracing the concept of machine automation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been quite incredible the change we\u2019re seeing in the adoption rate of machine control,\u201d says Peter Robson, senior director of intelligent machine control, Komatsu. \u201cYear over year, the adoption rate increases, down now to where a customer that may have just two or three machines is adopting machine control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He notes some general contractors have begun to require subcontractors to have machine control on their equipment. \u201cThey understand the benefits to the timeline [to meet] deadlines and for preventing over.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oTC95-n3JmY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>With that said, adding intelligent Machine Control to the most popular excavator size class in North America could be viewed as risky by some given views on technology with these machines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTraditionally, there\u2019s been some resistance to add technology to excavators,\u201d Schwieters acknowledges. \u201cIt comes from the idea that \u2018I do not want to slow up the most valued machine on our jobsite, and technology is going to slow us up.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe that could be the case with traditional aftermarket indicate systems or a simple 2D system, where an operator is relying on watching a screen to make sure he doesn\u2019t go past grade,\u201d he continues. \u201cBut in 2014, with the introduction of our\u00a0<a class=\"outbound_link_tracking\" href=\"http:\/\/www.komatsuamerica.com\/equipment\/excavators\/25001-70000lbs\/pc210lci-10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PC210LCi<\/a>, that mindset of resistance changed to excitement and new possibilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schwieters expects similar excitement to build with the PC360LCi-11 and its larger counterpart. \u201cI believe that with the combination of the proliferation of base stations, network solutions and the general comfort level of customers using 3D technology, our customers are going to find ways to make this machine productive on their jobsites,\u201d he states. \u201cIt\u2019s a combination of the correct size class, the integration and the customers\u2019 thirst to find the next competitive edge&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is where we see our excavator line growing in future,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<h3>Intelligence Goes Remote<\/h3>\n<p>Komatsu\u2019s \u201csmart\u201d crawler dozer lineup now encompasses six models ranging from the 105-hp\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.komatsuamerica.com\/equipment\/dozers\/0-150hp\/d39pxi-23\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">D39PXi-23<\/a>\u00a0to the 354-hp <a class=\"outbound_link_tracking\" href=\"http:\/\/www.komatsuamerica.com\/equipment\/dozers\/261-500hp\/d155axi-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">D155AXi-8<\/a>. All come standard with factory-installed intelligent Machine Control, which allows automated operation from heavy dozing to fine grading.<\/p>\n<p>While the latest models in the lineup were highlighted at the event, what generated the greatest buzz among journalists was the\u00a0presentation of the remote-controlled D155AXi-8 intelligent Machine Control dozer. It represents a new era in remote control system technology.<\/p>\n<p>Komatsu is no stranger to remote control technology in heavy equipment, but recognized there were obstacles to its acceptance.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s no easy task for the operator to get the production out of the machine \u2013 to be efficient,\u201d says Jason Anetsburger, product manager for intelligent Machine Control, Komatsu America Corp. \u201cWhen you\u2019re removed from the machine, you don\u2019t have the sensation and feedback.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It addressed this by pairing its proprietary 3D integrated machine control system with a line-of-sight (up to 100 m) remote control.
