{"id":5066,"date":"2016-07-19T13:29:35","date_gmt":"2016-07-19T13:29:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/minutes.machine.market\/?p=5066"},"modified":"2016-07-19T13:29:35","modified_gmt":"2016-07-19T13:29:35","slug":"man-jailed-for-2-years-over-2007-fatal-self-erecting-tower-crane-collapse-in-malta","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/machine.market\/blog\/man-jailed-for-2-years-over-2007-fatal-self-erecting-tower-crane-collapse-in-malta\/","title":{"rendered":"Man jailed for 2 years over 2007 fatal self erecting tower crane collapse in Malta"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Gozo court has jailed a man whose permit-less self erecting tower crane collapsed on a car and killed its occupant in 2007.<\/p>\n<p>Baskal Saliba, 54, was jailed for two years for negligently causing the death of Sammy Spiteri, whose car had crashed into the structure in Victoria, Gozo on 7\u00a0October 2007.<\/p>\n<p>The high speed impact occurred at around 4:40am. Spiteri&#8217;s car hit the crane with such force that crane was knocked off balance and collapsed, the counterweight falling directly on Spiteri vehicle, crushing it. Spiteri, whose toxicological report\u00a0showed him to have\u00a0been well over the drink-drive limit and have\u00a0taken ecstasy, died after debris lacerated his lung.<\/p>\n<p>Magistrate Joe Mifsud noted that the accused lacked a permit to set up the crane in that road and that this showed a lack of good judgement on the part of the accused, also noting that his failure to cooperate with the law showed that the man felt he was above the law.<\/p>\n<p>The court agreed with the conclusions of an Engineer&#8217;s report that lambasted Saliba&#8217;s \u201cgreat and manifest\u201d negligence and stressed the importance of ensuring safety at the workplace.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.maltatoday.com.mt\/news\/court_and_police\/67699\/man_jailed_over_2007_fatal_crane_collapse#.V44qqrgrKUk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Malta Today<\/a> reports, the court said it must send the message that human life is important and supersedes all other considerations.
