On Saturday <a href=\"http:\/\/www.miamidade.gov\/portmiami\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PortMiami <\/a>received its first vessel of that kind from the Canal. And it may mean a new era for Miami as a world commercial hub.<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese ship <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marinetraffic.com\/en\/ais\/details\/ships\/shipid:712970\/mmsi:538003729\/imo:9424912\/vessel:MOL_MAJESTY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MOL Majesty<\/a> measures almost a thousand feet long and 150 feet wide. Larger than any cargo shipPortMiami has ever seen.\u00a0Post-Panamax ships like the Majesty can carry three times the cargo of ordinary vessels. PortMiami was recently dredged to 50 feet to accommodate them.<\/p>\n<p>The port\u2019s new gantry cranes were unloading the Majesty\u2019s containers Saturday as local leaders like Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez gathered beneath the mammoth boat. Gimenezhailed its arrival \u2013 and the port\u2019s $2 billion expansion.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe are the cruise capital of the world,&#8221; Gimenez said. &#8220;And today we mark the beginning of maybe being the cargo capital of the world too. And what does that mean? J-O-B-S. Thousands of jobs.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Panama Canal Director Jorge Quijano said even bigger ships are yet to come.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI\u2019m very thrilled to tell you that yes, this is a small vessel compared to what you will see in the future,&#8221; Quijano said. &#8220;A vessel almost twice as big as this just transited the Panama Canal, and I hope that I see that vessel start hitting Miami very soon here.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Miami\u2019s post-Panamax era is starting, however, amid a big slump in international trade.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The wider Panama Canal opened two weeks ago \u2013 servicing more massive post-Panamax\u00a0ships.
