The principle scope of work involved the extension of the main crane boom, giving the A2SEA-owned offshore wind farm installation vessel increased reaching capacity: a pertinent point considering the trend of the increasing size of offshore wind turbine components.<\/p>\n<p>The boom extension has increased the reach capacity of <strong>Sea Installer<\/strong>, allowing the vessel to handle the ever-increasing size of offshore wind turbine components.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DSAm<\/strong> &#8211; part of <strong>Damen Shiprepair &amp; Conversion<\/strong> &#8211; began the work by removing all crane-related components including the boom, boom rest, A-frame, winch and hook block pockets from the vessel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A2SEA<\/strong> supplied the new A-frame and boom extension; while <strong>Niron Staal<\/strong>, also part of Damen Shiprepair &amp; Conversion, supplied the new boom rest, hook block pockets, trolley rail and support stools.<\/p>\n<p>The crane boom was lengthened by inserting the new extension, explained DSAm. All parts were composed of high tensile S690 steel, which needed to be cut and welded at the correct temperature &#8211; an operation that you cannot rush, said DSAm.<\/p>\n<p>The configuration of the upgraded crane means that it can be operated in two modes &#8211; a long mode with the crane boom extension, and a short mode with the extension removed.<\/p>\n<p>Sea Installer now has a flexible crane capacity of 900 tonnes in short mode and 700 tonnes in long mode.<\/p>\n<p>Two<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mammoet.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mammoet<\/a><\/strong> cranes were used to lift the extended crane boom onto the vessel.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MysLGRvAVE4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A2SEA-owned jack-up leaves Damen Shipyards able to handle bigger offshore wind installation projects\u00a0DSAm has concluded major modification works on the SEA INSTALLER in June 2016.
