But the bigger canal \u2014 and its ability to handle supersized cargo ships \u2014 will likely mean more jobs at the Port of Baltimore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a huge occasion,\u201d said Richard Scher, director of communications at the Maryland Port Administration. \u201cThe Port of Baltimore is one of only three East Coast ports that can today take the largest ships in the world. You have to have the necessary infrastructure at your port to be able to handle the massive ships,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"ndn-video-player-2\" class=\"ndn_embed ndn_embedding ndn_embedContainer ndn-widget-embed-3 ndn_embedded\" data-config-width=\"100%\" data-config-height=\"9\/16w\" data-config-distributor-id=\"90460\"><\/div>\n<p>That means a 50-foot deep channel, a 50-foot deep container berth and supersized cranes that can reach over, handle and lift containers off those large ships.<\/p>\n<div id=\"ndn-video-player-3\" class=\"ndn_embed ndn_embedding ndn_embedContainer ndn-widget-embed-4 ndn_embedded\" data-config-width=\"100%\" data-config-height=\"9\/16w\" data-config-distributor-id=\"90460\"><\/div>\n<p>The only other East Coast ports with that capacity are Norfolk, Virginia, and Miami, Florida, but Scher says other ports on the East Coast, from New York down to Charleston, South Carolina,\u00a0and Savannah, Georgia, all have hurdles to jump to reach that capacity milestone.<\/p>\n<div id=\"ym_1146333557806185254\" class=\"ym\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"ndn-video-player-4\" class=\"ndn_embed ndn_embedding ndn_embedContainer ndn-widget-embed-5 ndn_embedded\" data-config-width=\"100%\" data-config-height=\"9\/16w\" data-config-distributor-id=\"90460\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt really is an arms race between all the other ports on the East Coast,\u201d said Scher.<\/p>\n<div id=\"ndn-video-player-5\" class=\"ndn_embed ndn_embedding ndn_embedContainer ndn-widget-embed-6 ndn_embedded\" data-config-width=\"100%\" data-config-height=\"9\/16w\" data-config-distributor-id=\"90460\"><\/div>\n<p>Right now he says there are more than 13,600 direct jobs generated in the Port of Baltimore but statewide the port is linked to nearly 130,000 jobs.<\/p>\n<div id=\"ndn-video-player-6\" class=\"ndn_embed ndn_embedding ndn_embedContainer ndn-widget-embed-7 ndn_embedded\" data-config-width=\"100%\" data-config-height=\"9\/16w\" data-config-distributor-id=\"90460\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe fact that the Port of Baltimore will start to see larger ships bringing more cargo through the Panama Canal than before will do nothing but increase jobs,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"ndn-video-player-7\" class=\"ndn_embed ndn_embedding ndn_embedContainer ndn-widget-embed-8 ndn_embedded\" data-config-width=\"100%\" data-config-height=\"9\/16w\" data-config-distributor-id=\"90460\"><\/div>\n<p>The port takes in a lot of cargo destined for surrounding states including Delaware and West Virginia, but Scher says with the bigger ships coming in, the Port of Baltimore can explore markets into the Midwest as well.<\/p>\n<div id=\"ndn-video-player-8\" class=\"ndn_embed ndn_embedding ndn_embedContainer ndn-widget-embed-9 ndn_embedded\" data-config-width=\"100%\" data-config-height=\"9\/16w\" data-config-distributor-id=\"90460\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a rail hurdle we need to get over to develop those pathways,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<div id=\"ndn-video-player-9\" class=\"ndn_embed ndn_embedding ndn_embedContainer ndn-widget-embed-10 ndn_embedded\" data-config-width=\"100%\" data-config-height=\"9\/16w\" data-config-distributor-id=\"90460\">\u00a0The first super ships coming from the expanded Panama Canal will arrive in the Port of Baltimore sometime next month.<\/div>\n<div class=\"ndn_embed ndn_embedding ndn_embedContainer ndn-widget-embed-10 ndn_embedded\" data-config-width=\"100%\" data-config-height=\"9\/16w\" data-config-distributor-id=\"90460\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"ndn_embed ndn_embedding ndn_embedContainer ndn-widget-embed-10 ndn_embedded\" data-config-width=\"100%\" data-config-height=\"9\/16w\" data-config-distributor-id=\"90460\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"ndn-video-player-10\" class=\"ndn_embed ndn_embedding ndn_embedContainer ndn-widget-embed-11 ndn_embedded\" data-config-width=\"100%\" data-config-height=\"9\/16w\" data-config-distributor-id=\"90460\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"ndn-video-player-bottom\" class=\"ndn_embed ndn_embedding ndn_embedContainer ndn-widget-embed-12 ndn_embedded\" data-config-width=\"100%\" data-config-height=\"9\/16w\" data-config-distributor-id=\"90460\"><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"ftb-widget\" data-width=\"600\" data-height=\"400\" data-widget-id=\"2Bs0LMtbKtL\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.graphiq.com\/wlp\/2Bs0LMtbKtL\" ><a href=\"https:\/\/www.graphiq.com\/wlp\/2Bs0LMtbKtL\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"font:14px\/16px arial;color:#3d3d3d;\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Top Commodities Passing Through the Panama Canal | Graphiq<\/a><\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/s.graphiq.com\/rx\/widgets.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON \u2014 The international maritime community is celebrating the opening of the newly expanded Panama Canal.
