Kobelco Construction Machinery U.S.A. Inc.<\/a>, a subsidiary of Tokyo-based Kobe Steel, finished construction and commenced production at its new S.C. excavator plant.<\/p>\n

Hiroshi \u201cRocky\u201d Morita, a Kobelco vice president, said his company visited eight states before picking 77 acres along State 290 as the site for its $41 million plant.<\/p>\n

On June 2, Kobelco Construction Machinery USA will host a grand opening for its plant at 1876 Highway 290 in Moore, S.C. The event is by invitation only.<\/p>\n

The team of executives that made the decision thought the site offered enough land in good shape, Morita said, with easy access to I-26 and I-85 and beyond that, the Port of Charleston, which the plant uses to import components from Japan and China.<\/p>\n

The $41 million, 156,000-square-foot facility ihould employ\u00a0151 workers at the plant by 2019, said Ralph Wabnitz, general manager. He said production workers will be paid $16-$18 an hour and won\u2019t have to work nights or weekends.<\/p>\n
