Singley worked for Moundville-based West Alabama Mechanical and was operating the crane at Southern Ionics in Holt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pagpag1\">His family filed a wrongful death lawsuit six months later, claiming that Southeastern Crane Inspections LLC had inspected the crane in February 2012, but failed to properly inform West Alabama Mechanical of serious problems, said Tuscaloosa attorney Matt Glover.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pagpag1\">The crane turned over because a safety feature that stabilizes the crane failed, he said. The jury returned a verdict Tuesday awarding Singley&#8217;s family $5.5 million, which Glover said is one of the largest jury awards in a west Alabama court during the last decade.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"pagpag1\">&#8220;This jury really worked hard on the case,&#8221; said Glover of the Tuscaloosa firm Prince, Glover &amp; Hayes. &#8220;They paid close attention to the evidence and came back with a verdict that sends a loud and clear message to those who want to do business in west Alabama. If you are going to work here, our citizens expect you to be honest and have a commitment to make safety the top priority on the job.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"pagpag1\">The suit was initially filed against the crane inspection business, the company that sold the crane, the owners and safety inspector of West Alabama Mechanical. All but Southeastern Crane reached a $950,000 settlement before the trial, leaving Southeastern Crane as the lone a defendant. The judgment means Southeastern Crane will be responsible for paying $4.5 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pagpag2\">Singley was born in Axis, in Mobile County, and was living in Linden when he died.
