Casper Star Tribune<\/a> reports Wyoming Machinery Company<\/a> is laying off employees.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Citing the downturn in the state\u2019s energy sector, the CAT store announced Thursday that it had laid off about 6 percent of its workforce.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The company began offering early retirement packages earlier this year, and Thursday\u2019s layoffs were the next step in coping with Wyoming\u2019s energy downturn. The company disclosed the layoffs in a statement to the Star-Tribune. A company representative declined to comment further.\u00a0The layoffs occurred in Casper and Gillette, according to the statement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The job cuts come at a time when pink slips have become more commonplace in the state\u2019s once-vibrant energy industry. Casper rotating and processing equipment provider Power Service Inc.<\/a> cut more than 50 positions on March 18. The state\u2019s two largest coal mines, Black Thunder<\/a> and North Antelope Rochelle<\/a>, laid off a combined 460 employees on March 31. A month later, Alpha Natural Resources<\/a> laid off 37 employees at its two mines near Gillette.<\/div>\n

Wyoming Machinery has locations in Casper, Cheyenne, Gillette and Rock Springs \u2014 started out in the Oil City in 1969. Roughly half of the company\u2019s employees work in Casper, according to the company\u2019s website<\/a>.\u00a0The Casper-based company serves many sectors of the economy, but the oil and coal industries account for a sizable portion of its business.\u00a0Wyoming\u2019s unemployment rate has also been steadily rising and reached 5.2 percent in March<\/a> \u2014 the highest it\u2019s been since 2012. That number is expected to grow in the coming weeks, when coal mining layoffs and other industry cuts are factored into the unemployment rate.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
