It was the award season for Caterpillar<\/a> recently, which won state and local awards as manufacturer of the year.<\/p>\n

Last week Caterpillar received from the Athens-Clarke County Economic Development Department its Manufacturer of the Year Award.<\/p>\n

Then this week, Caterpillar was one of three winners of state awards.<\/p>\n

Gov. Nathan Deal announced Monday that Caterpillar was the Manufacturer of the Year for companies with 500 or more employees.<\/p>\n

Suniva\u2019s Norcross facility won in the category of 150-500 employees; and Thomasville\u2019s Cives Steel Company won in the category of 150 or fewer employees.<\/p>\n

The 2016 Governor\u2019s Awards Luncheon, which was held at the Georgia International Convention Center on April 21, marks the 22nd year celebrating Manufacturing Appreciation Week in Georgia. The annual awards luncheon is the highlight of Georgia Manufacturing Appreciation Week, which is co-hosted by the Technical College System of Georgia and the Georgia Department of Economic Development. Sponsoring the event were Georgia Power, the accounting and consulting firm of Habif, Arogeti & Wynne, Georgia Tech\u2019s Georgia Manufacturing Extension Partnership, and the Georgia Association of Manufacturers.<\/p>\n

\u201cCaterpillar is honored to be recognized by Gov. Deal of the great state of Georgia as large manufacturer of the year,\u201d said Todd Henry, head of operations at Caterpillar in a prepared statement. The Oconee Enterprise was unable to arrange an interview with Henry in time for this week\u2019s newspaper.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The prepared statement continued, \u201cFrom our first meeting with the State Economic Development team and subsequent meetings with leaders from Athens-Clarke County, Oconee County, Athens Technical College and Georgia Quick Start, we quickly formed great partnerships and wonderful working relationships that have endured the test of time and paved the way forward for a very rapid and successful ramp-up of the Athens facility.\u201d<\/p>\n

Henry accepted the local award at the Athens Cotton Press, crediting employees “and all the great people in this room” \u2014 a gathering of local elected officials, local government staff members and a host of Athens business and civic leaders \u2014 for Caterpillar\u2019s success in its three years in Athens.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt doesn\u2019t seem like it\u2019s been three years,\u201d Henry said in expressing appreciation for the award.<\/p>\n

Caterpillar was one of three nominees for the award. The others included Eaton Corp., which manufactures vehicle superchargers and supercharger components, and McCann Aerospace Machining, a division of Accurus Aerospace, which manufactures complex aerospace parts and assemblies.<\/p>\n

Caterpillar was noted particularly for its support of education, including the grants it provides to the Athens Career Academy and for a partnership with Athens Technical College connected to the school\u2019s commercial truck driving and manufacturing operations areas of study.<\/p>\n

In order to be considered for the award, companies must demonstrate significant community involvement, have a demonstrated economic impact on the community, and show a commitment to building up their respective workforces.<\/p>\n

As a local winner, Caterpillar now qualifies for a state-level Manufacturer of the Year award, The state awards are presented to manufacturing companies in small-, medium- and large-manufacturer categories. State-level winners must exhibit a high degree of corporate responsibility, significant economic impact on the state, and workforce excellence.<\/p>\n
