The record-setting, 10,000-plus pieces assembled for the company\u2019s five-day\u00a0sale this week look impressive, but also illustrate something industry insiders have known for years \u2014 the Edmonton region\u00a0is one of the world\u2019s largest industrial auction centers.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is equipment central, so to speak, so when people \u2026 are looking for used equipment, they know over time this is a hub,\u201d said Brian Glenn, Ritchie\u2019s senior vice-president for Western Canada.<\/p>\n

The Vancouver-based company last year moved\u00a0$731-million worth of equipment through\u00a0its 80-hectare Nisku facility, up from $569 million in 2014.<\/p>\n

That gives the site\u00a0about 14 per cent of the firm\u2019s multibillion-dollar total sales.<\/p>\n

While Orlando, Fla., typically hosts the world\u2019s largest auction over several days each February,\u00a0more machinery\u00a0moves annually through\u00a0Nisku\u00a0than any of Ritchie\u2019s other roughly\u00a040 locations.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou look at the province of Alberta alone, the equipment population, regardless of which industry you\u2019re in, is probably greater than anywhere in the country,\u201d Glenn said.<\/p>\n

One key reason is that\u00a0big pieces are usually too expensive to ship far\u00a0for sale.<\/p>\n

Almost\u00a0half the items purchased from Ritchie Bros. in Edmonton last year went to out-of-province customers\u00a0and\u00a013 per cent left the country, almost entirely to\u00a0Americans with their strong\u00a0dollars.<\/p>\n

Ritchie Bros. isn\u2019t the only firm contributing to Edmonton\u2019s importance\u00a0in the international auction industry.<\/p>\n

Osman Auction Inc. moved last December to a new $22-million, nine-hectare facility on 199 Street,\u00a0adding an auction ring with a state-of-the-art audio-visual system\u00a0and\u00a0doors that roll open to show bidders each piece of\u00a0equipment driving\u00a0 past, similar to the setup at Ritchie Bros.<\/p>\n

\u2018Everybody\u2019s downsizing\u2019<\/h2>\n

General manager Jeff Spiller expects\u00a0a record sale May 25, although he can\u2019t provide\u00a0numbers.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s good for the auction industry\u00a0doesn\u2019t necessarily\u00a0mean good things for the ailing Alberta economy.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll the oil and gas equipment has just accumulated. Now, unfortunately, a lot of it\u2019s being liquidated,\u201d Spiller\u00a0said.<\/p>\n

For example, \u201csomebody who owned 20 graders because they needed it for their business now only needs six \u2026 Everybody\u2019s downsizing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Family-owned Michener Allen Auctioneering Ltd., which runs\u00a013\u00a0sales a year from facilities in Calgary and in\u00a0Acheson near Edmonton\u2019s\u00a0western boundary, expects to handle\u00a0$50 million to $60 million worth of industrial equipment this year.<\/p>\n

Edmonton has always been their biggest location, co-owner Wade Michener said.<\/p>\n

He said\u00a0the local auction industry creates\u00a0jobs\u00a0and a higher international profile for the region.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s work \u201cin transportation of equipment and clean up, and \u2026\u00a0hotel rooms,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd the exposure the city gets to the world, especially on the Internet \u2014 I think it\u2019s been put on the map.\u201d<\/p>\n

The web\u00a0accounts for\u00a0a growing percentage of auction sales. In 2015, about 55 per cent of sales from Ritchie Bros. Edmonton auctions, or $402 million, were made online, compared to 47 per cent\u00a0\u2014\u00a0<\/b>$270 million \u2014 the year before.<\/p>\n

American online auction house\u00a0IronPlanet, which has sold $4 billion US worth of material since 2000, held its first live auction in Edmonton last fall after merging with Cat Auction Services.<\/p>\n

Its\u00a0work includes marketing used machinery for Finning International, the world\u2019s largest Caterpillar dealer.<\/p>\n

Still, many people like to come to see the machinery for themselves, kick the tires, put the hydraulics through their paces\u00a0and listen to\u00a0an\u00a0auctioneer\u2019s mesmerizing torrent of words before plunking down $130,000 for\u00a0a loader.<\/p>\n

Some do inspections in the days before a sale or send an agent, then bid from their offices or home, while others sit in the plastic seats and signal their interest by hand or a\u00a0nod.<\/p>\n

They\u2019re\u00a0attracted by the chance to find a deal, the\u00a0opportunity to network or the chance\u00a0gather information about the possible value of their own fleets.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou get to find out what\u2019s happening. You get a feel for what the economy is like,\u201d said Edmonton\u2019s Bernie Briggs, who works in\u00a0heavy equipment rentals.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can read what some politician said or your banker says, but this is reality. This isn\u2019t theory.\u201d<\/p>\n
