Engineers behind the state of Texas $930 million plan to replace Corpus Christi’s iconic span are pulling out their biggest to date.<\/p>\n
Crews took advantage of a break in the recent rains Thursday to move in the first pieces of what eventually will become a massive launching gantry crane to the Harbor Bridge replacement project work site.<\/p>\n
The launching gantry crane will be used to move and place the 100-ton concrete segments that will make up the approach and cable-stayed portion of the project<\/p>\n
Flatiron\/Dragados, the contractor hired to head the years-long project, posted images of the crane pieces as they were wheeled to the\u00a0North Approach section of the work site by a 22-axle\u00a0transporter.<\/p>\n
Assembling the crane will take three to four weeks. Once that’s done, it will measure 530 feet.<\/p>\n
“This is going to be a\u00a0monster crane,” project manager Nick Manfredini said.<\/p>\n
State transportation officials say\u00a0the Harbor Bridge, built in the 1950s, has outlived its design and needs to be replaced.<\/p>\n
In all,\u00a02,600 segments, which are being crafted at a construction yard in Robstown, will be stitched\u00a0together to make the new bridge.<\/p>\n
The first such segment was placed on the work site\u00a0last week.\u00a0The crane will be used at several different stages of the bridge\u00a0during the project.<\/p>\n
