{"id":12930,"date":"2018-08-28T12:20:13","date_gmt":"2018-08-28T12:20:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/minutes.machine.market\/?p=12930"},"modified":"2018-08-28T12:20:13","modified_gmt":"2018-08-28T12:20:13","slug":"australiasboom-logistics-says-it-cant-afford-illawarra-and-hunter-pay-demands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/machine.market\/blog\/australiasboom-logistics-says-it-cant-afford-illawarra-and-hunter-pay-demands\/","title":{"rendered":"Boom Logistics based in Australia says it cannot afford Illawarra and Hunter pay demands"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"article-5613541\">\n<article class=\"article\" role=\"article\">\n<header class=\"article__header\">\n<div id=\"share-top\" class=\"social--share-wrap\">\n<p>Crane Hire company Boom Logistics is facing indefinite strikes at its Port Kembla, Carrington and\u00a0Singleton yards in an industrial dispute that the union says is about workers getting a fair share of record corporate profits.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"story\" data-io-article-url=\"https:\/\/www.illawarramercury.com.au\/story\/5613541\/workers-at-port-kembla-company-vote-to-take-indefinite-strike-action\/\">\n<div class=\"sticky-container\">\n<div class=\"article__body news-article-body\">\n<div class=\"assets\">\n<p>Boom Logistics is a national crane operator that grew quickly in the past decade but which ran into financial difficulty,\u00a0racking up almost $55\u00a0million in after-tax losses over the past three years, although the most recent loss, of $1.5 million, has been championed by the company as a sign it has turned the corner.<\/p>\n<p>But in leaflets distributed to members, the construction division of the Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining and Energy Union says Boom\u2019s growth has been at its workers\u2019 expense, with the striking employees going five years without a pay rise.<\/p>\n<p>Boom Logistics managing director Brenden Mitchell says the company is offering the striking workers 15 per cent over three years in Newcastle and 13 per cent over three years at Singleton and Port Kembla, but the union says this offer comes with a big reduction in working conditions at a time when the company is massively ramping up the number of casuals it employs.<\/p>\n<div class=\"assets\">\n<p>\u201cThe company says it can\u2019t afford (to pay) anymore but its own financial records show this is a lie,\u201d the union leaflet says.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"assets\">\n<p>It points to increases of 20 percent or more in executive payments in the 2017 annual report, a trend that continues the 2018 annual report lodged on Monday with the stock exchange.<\/p>\n<div class=\"assets\">\n<p>One of the CFMMEU\u2019s new Hunter area organizers, Mark Cross, says the vote\u00a0to take indefinite strike action should be read as a sign as to how fed-up the workforce \u2013\u00a0many of them long-term employees \u2013\u00a0was with the company.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"assets\">\n<p>He also put the strike in a national context, saying: \u201cWe\u2019ve got record low wages growth, record household debt and record corporate profits across the board. We need to restore some sort of balance, given we are at a 70-year high in inequality rates.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"assets\">\n<p>Mr. Mitchell, who is stepping down next month said the company could not afford to pay the demands made by the union.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"assets\">\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t have a problem with our employees,\u201d Mr. Mitchell said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"assets\">\n<p>\u201cThey are good, solid people but everyone has to realize how competitive things are.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"assets\">\n<p>\u2018\u2019It\u2019s been very difficult the last few years. A lot of businesses have closed their doors.
