In addition to crane and other heavy equipment operators, the union is made up of\u00a0mechanics, surveyors in the construction industry, and stationary engineers, who work in operations and maintenance in building and industrial complexes, according to the Washington State Labor Council.<\/p>\n<div id=\"promo-left-full\" class=\"marketing-placeholder-full article-subscribe\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-promo-left\" class=\"dfp-ad dfp-promo-left\" data-google-query-id=\"CJXq6OyW_9wCFcnCwAod7dcGXw\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/81279359\/seattletimes.com\/seattle-news_3__container__\"><span class=\"annotated\" data-st-annotation-ref=\"d12171\">Most construction workers aren\u2019t covered by the contract<\/span>, and some workers in other unions did show up to job sites Tuesday.\u00a0<span class=\"annotated\" data-st-annotation-ref=\"48fe43\">But those projects throughout Western Washington<\/span>\u00a0faced potential delays because some of the workers involved in the strike have integral jobs.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The crane operators, in particular, are pivotal:<a class=\"content-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/business\/real-estate\/seattle-tops-the-nation-in-tower-cranes-for-third-straight-year-as-construction-reaches-new-peak\/\">\u00a0Seattle has 65<\/a>\u00a0cranes remaking its skyline \u2014 the most in the country \u2014 while Bellevue has 14. It\u2019s also unclear how long the strike could last.<\/p>\n<p>The union and management \u2014 the Associated General Contractors of Washington \u2014 have been negotiating since May. Representatives from both sides had reached tentative agreements on two occasions, but both were rejected by the workers.<\/p>\n<p>The most recent tentative deal, reached earlier this month, included a 15.9 percent pay increase across the board over three years, as well as a 13 percent increase in fringe benefits such as health and welfare and pension pay. The first offer, which was rejected by nearly two-thirds of union members in July, had proposed a 14.9 percent pay bump and 9.2 percent fringe benefit increase over three years. Union workers make $37.70 to $43.13 an hour in base pay now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis union has been a long-time partner with us and we\u2019re going to work with them,\u201d said Doug Peterson, director of labor relations for the Associated General Contractors of Washington.<\/p>\n<div id=\"userMessagingInset\" class=\"user-messaging animate loaded\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"NewsletterSignupInset \">\n<form id=\"signupForm\" class=\"form\" action=\"https:\/\/secure.seattletimes.com\/api\/newsletter-signup\" method=\"POST\">\n<div class=\"copy-wrapper\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"button-wrapper\">The contractors group added in a statement that it was disappointed that the contract was rejected but that the group was \u201ccommitted to bargaining in good faith.\u201d No future negotiating sessions have been scheduled.<\/div>\n<\/form>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The union\u2019s last three-year contract expired in June. That deal included a total 6 percent pay increase over three years.<\/p>\n<p>Peterson noted that this particular union hasn\u2019t gone on strike in recent memory. A year ago, local concrete truck drivers in a Teamsters union\u00a0<a class=\"content-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/business\/real-estate\/concrete-driver-strike-that-slowed-seattle-construction-endswith-labor-deal\/\">went on strike<\/a>\u00a0for about a week and slowed construction before reaching a new contract.<\/p>\n<p>The cranes can cost $15,000 to $55,000 a month to rent, depending on the model.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Seattle area\u2019s construction frenzy slowed Tuesday as crane operators and some other workers walked off the job after rejecting a new union contract.
