<\/p>\nWASHINGTON, D.C. – South Capitol Bridgebuilders, a joint venture team comprised of Archer Western and Granite Construction Company has been awarded the South Capitol Street Corridor Phase 1 design-build contract by the District of Columbia Department of Transportation (DDOT). Archer Western holds a 50% share of the joint venture that will be responsible for constructing the $441 million project, with AECOM serving as lead designer.<\/p>\n

The South Capitol Corridor Project, Washington D.C.’s largest public infrastructure project in history, includes replacement of the existing Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge over the Anacostia River. The scope of work includes the construction of two new approach ovals and the reconstruction of a portion of I-295 adjacent to the new bridge. When complete, the bridge will have six lanes, and improved accommodations for bicycle and pedestrian traffic.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe South Capitol Corridor Project promises to significantly improve the mobility of the more than 70,000 vehicles, bicyclists, and pedestrians who cross the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge each day,\u201d said DDOT Director Leif Dormsjo. \u201cThe new bridge will simultaneously enhance the District\u2019s transportation infrastructure, boost the local economy, and support the ongoing revitalization of the Anacostia Waterfront and development on both sides of the river.\u201d<\/p>\n
Construction is scheduled to begin by the end of 2017 and last through 2021.<\/p>\n
