{"id":10985,"date":"2017-04-19T13:36:01","date_gmt":"2017-04-19T13:36:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/minutes.machine.market\/?p=10985"},"modified":"2017-04-19T13:36:01","modified_gmt":"2017-04-19T13:36:01","slug":"caterpillar-and-dealer-westpac-show-how-autonomous-off-road-dump-trucks-are-changing-australian-mines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/machine.market\/blog\/caterpillar-and-dealer-westpac-show-how-autonomous-off-road-dump-trucks-are-changing-australian-mines\/","title":{"rendered":"Caterpillar and dealer WesTrac show how autonomous Off-Highway Trucks are changing Australian mines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-incom=\"P0\">While much of the media is focused upon driverless cars, Caterpillar has forged ahead, developing autonomous trucks and heavy equipment capable of delivering significant benefit to business.<\/p>\n<p data-incom=\"P1\">During Australia\u2019s mining boom school teachers, cleaners and plumbers quit their jobs to become highly paid truck drivers in the country\u2019s remote and massive iron and coal mines.<\/p>\n<p data-incom=\"P2\">Now that the mining boom is over and Australia\u2019s\u00a0truck drivers have headed back to their old jobs driverless off road dump trucks are starting to take over.<\/p>\n<p data-incom=\"P3\"><a href=\"http:\/\/m\/en_US\/articles\/customer-stories\/mining\/autonomous-haulage-making-mining-safer-and-more-productive-today.html\">Caterpillar<\/a>, one of the world\u2019s biggest suppliers of mining equipment, has been working on self driving trucks since the 1990s and its Australian dealer, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.westrac.com.au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WesTrac<\/a>, boasts they were the first organization to deploy autonomous vehicle technologies into open cast mines.<\/p>\n<p data-incom=\"P3\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10989 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cranemarket.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/westrac.gif\" alt=\"westrac\" width=\"240\" height=\"63\" \/><\/p>\n<p data-incom=\"P4\">At the recent AWS Summit in Sydney James Scott, the Group Executive Director of Technology and Innovation of Westrac\u2019s parent company \u2013 the sprawling Seven Group Holdings conglomerate \u2013 explained how autonomous vehicles are part of rethinking both their and their clients\u2019 businesses.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p data-incom=\"P5\">When we think about the appropriate strategy within each of our companies, we think about the rate of change that\u2019s required, do we need incremental change or do we need revolutionary change. Do we need to fundamentally change an existing business model or challenge a current customer proposition?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-incom=\"P6\">While driverless trucks may be revolutionary for the truck drivers that used to steer them, Scott sees them as more an incremental change.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p data-incom=\"P7\">An example of what we would refer to as incremental innovation is our autonomous haulage program with FMG at their Solomon Hub.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-incom=\"P8\">Fortescue Mining Group\u2019s Solomon Hub comprises the Firetail and Kings Valley iron ore mines in the Pilbara region of Australia\u2019s North West which together have a production capacity of over 70 mega tonnes each year. When the project was scoped in 2010, the initial feasibility study called for 75 manned trucks but in July 2011 FMG ordered 12\u00a0 autonomous 793F vehicles as a pilot. Now with the mines up and running, FMG operates 54 driverless dumpsters which alone results in a $100 million capital saving on twenty trucks. The operational benefits are also substantial claims Scott.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p data-incom=\"P9\">Over four years they\u2019ve moved 200 million tonnes and delivered a 20% productivity increase over their manned fleet. They\u2019ve also reduced their pit to port costs by 43%<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-incom=\"P10\"><a href=\"http:\/\/diginomica.com\/2017\/04\/17\/sending-disruption-mines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Diginomica<\/a> reports, there were implementation costs to deploying the driverless vehicles such as solving for the vehicles stopping for puffs of dust on the road, something extremely common in Outback Australia let alone an open cast mine. Despite initial glitches, the cost and productivity benefits were compelling.<\/p>\n<p data-incom=\"P10\">Westrac and Caterpillar also found they can make further cost savings by eliminating some comfort and safety features on the trucks with weight savings of up to four tonnes per vehicle.<\/p>\n<p data-incom=\"P13\">While the ongoing direct labor savings are obvious, their is good news for workers in West Australia\u2019s mining industry. Westrac now has a technology workforce of over 100 people with specialist skills in robotics, data analytics, radio networks and GPS technologies to support the autonomous vehicles.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p data-incom=\"P14\">The data these platforms are producing is driving us to look at what\u2019s the revolutionary change that we\u2019re now going to drive into our customers\u2019 operations\u2026specifically in safety, productivity and cost reductions.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-incom=\"P15\">Mining data is something Scott sees as an opportunity across the entire Seven West Group, which sprawls across disparate industries ranging from mining to newspapers.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p data-incom=\"P16\">We are facing disruption across all of our industries and have experienced that no industry is immune to disruption.<\/p>\n<div class=\"entry-meta meta\"><span class=\"meta-avatar\"><a href=\"http:\/\/diginomica.com\/author\/pwallbank\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/16315-presscdn-0-27.pagely.netdna-cdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Paul-Wallbank.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"28px\" height=\"28x\" \/><\/a><\/span><span class=\"entry-author\">By <a href=\"http:\/\/diginomica.com\/author\/pwallbank\/\">Paul Wallbank<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While much of the media is focused upon driverless cars, Caterpillar has forged ahead, developing autonomous trucks and heavy equipment capable of delivering significant benefit to business.
