{"id":10896,"date":"2017-04-05T02:20:11","date_gmt":"2017-04-05T02:20:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/minutes.machine.market\/?p=10896"},"modified":"2017-04-05T02:20:11","modified_gmt":"2017-04-05T02:20:11","slug":"k-coghlan-plant-transport-ltd-excavators-removes-75-year-old-ww-ii-anti-invasion-barriers-from-southern-england-beachheads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/machine.market\/blog\/k-coghlan-plant-transport-ltd-excavators-removes-75-year-old-ww-ii-anti-invasion-barriers-from-southern-england-beachheads\/","title":{"rendered":"K Coghlan Plant &#038; Transport Ltd uses Hitachi excavators to remove WW II anti-invasion barriers from southern England beachheads"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THEY were meant to be Britain\u2019s last line of defense in the event of a German invasion. \u00a0Obstacles known as Admiralty Scaffolding were deployed on beaches along the south coast to prevent Nazi tanks storming ashore after being shipped across the Channel.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the barriers were placed at or just above the high water mark to prevent tanks gaining enough momentum to break through. \u00a0They were installed in 1940-41, when a German invasion was thought to be imminent and the rapid construction of fortifications left much of southern England looking like a battlefield.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/kevincoghlan.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kevin Coghlan Plant Hire and Transpor<\/a>t is using two Hitachi 21-ton excavators \u2013 one of which is fitted with a long arm that gives it a reach of 30 meters<\/p>\n<p>The spokesman said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe excavator is positioned just above the waterline at low tide and reaches into the sea to lift out the metal. A second excavator is fitted with a griddle bucket that resembles a giant sieve. The machine sifts out the sand and pebbles and retains the metal, which is deposited in a compound for removal.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Some of the barriers were left in place after the war ended in 1945.<\/p>\n<p>A council spokesman said: \u201cThe jagged metal defenses are partially buried in the sand just below the waterline but emerge periodically due to beach erosion caused by rough weather.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Spring tides allow heavy machinery to access parts of the beach that are usually under water.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Admiralty Scaffolding was placed on the beach by the Wiltshire Regiment in 1940-41.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the decades much of the structure disappeared below the sea bed but constant coastal erosion caused new sections to reappear regularly,\u201d said the council spokesman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the last nine years the council has been removing them as they emerge.
