The Safety Excellence Award recognizes a general contractor or specialty contractor who holds the highest level of safety standards for their employees and others whom they work with and has been successful in promoting safety within the company and throughout the industry.

Skanska’s dedication to safety in the Philadelphia Region can be seen through their involvement in the Mid-Atlantic Construction Safety Council (MACSC) as one of the founding members and their leadership role in the MACSC Construction Manager’s meetings. Skanska also works closely with local OSHA representatives on various events including outreach with the Youth Build Organization where students take part in safety demonstrations including proper fall protection, use of fire extinguishers, and the use of platform or podium ladders as safer alternatives to frame ladders.

Skanska promotes an Injury-Free Environment ® (IFE) culture throughout the entire company by providing IFE program orientations at the start of each project and other formal safety training throughout the year; holding daily meetings to encourage discussion of safety concerns and high risk activities on each project site; and requiring each subcontractor to submit a Construction Work Plan (CWP) to outline all hazards and risks associated with their work to be developed into a site-specific manual of hazards for employees.

“At Skanska we strive to provide the safest environment for our employees by keeping our teams informed, aware of their surroundings, and trained for emergency situations should they occur,” said Skanska USA General Manager Ed Szwarc. “To be recognized for our efforts by GBCA underscores our commitment to an injury-free environment.”

Skanska’s building experience in the Philadelphia/New Jersey/Delaware region includes such projects as the Nicholas and Athena Karabots Pavilion Addition at the Franklin Institute, University of Delaware East Campus Residence Hall, SugarHouse Casino, Inspira Healthcare Network, Christiana Care Health Systems Women and Children’s Health Building, American Airlines Terminal F expansion and baggage claim at Philadelphia International Airport, and the Nemours/A.I. duPont Hospital for Children.
