Palfinger Marine said Monday it has delivered two fixed boom type platform cranes for use at the 8-MW Formosa Phase 1 offshore wind project in Taiwan, marking its entry into the Asian offshore wind crane market.  Two PF 8000 fixed boom type platform cranes were delivered to Fortune Electric Co., Ltd.

The cranes will be mounted on transition pieces in the building yard in Shanghai and then delivered to Taiwan, where they will be installed in a final step at the offshore wind farm Formosa 1 OWF Phase 1.

The Taiwanese offshore wind market is expected to grow in the coming years as the government has a 3-GW wind power target by 2025, but there is not much space for onshore projects, Palfinger Marine pointed out.

The firm, a unit of Austrian company Palfinger AG, also says the offshore wind segment is expected to compensate for declining orders for oil-related offshore support vessel (OSV) equipment. Palfinger Marine customers in Singapore and Vietnam have recently ordered foldable knuckle boom cranes for wind farm supply and service vessels intended to operate at the European offshore wind farms.

“Our expertise as prime supplier for the established European offshore wind farms will help us become the preferred supplier for lifting appliances required at the upcoming offshore wind farms in greater China and North East Asia,” said Franz Schnoell, managing director of Palfinger Asia Pacific.
