The deceased has been identified as Palanivel, 50, a resident of Tamil Nadu. Tripunithura-native Ratheesh, 34, who suffered serious injuries in the accident, is undergoing treatment at Medical Trust Hospital here.   According to the police, the incident occurred around 8.30 am when workers were installing lift at the under-construction building of the School of Legal Studies on the Cusat campus.

Palanivel, who got trapped beneath the debris, died on the spot. Ratheesh was rescued by the other workers and was rushed to  hospital. According to the police, the accident was caused by serious flaws in adopting safety measures.

Meanwhile, Cusat Vice-chancellor J Letha ordered an inquiry into the incident. Construction activities have been suspended, in the wake of the accident.   Meanwhile, a minor scuffle erupted between security guards and rescue workers at the accident spot when the latter tried to take the body of Palanivel to a nearby hospital before arrival of the police.   Later, the dispute was settled by the police, who filed case under Section-304(A) of the IPC (Causing Death by Negligence) against the engineering wing of Cusat.
