itachi Construction Machinery (Europe) NV (HCME) presented the impressive new ZX17U-5 and ZX19U-5 mini excavators at Bauma 2016. Designed to be user-friendly, offering high levels of performance, comfort and durability, the Zaxis-5 models are ideal for working in narrow or confined spaces. Lightweight and compact, they can be easily transported from one job site to another, and are suitable for utilities, foundation work, landscaping and indoor demolition or construction projects.

Outstanding performance

The ZX17U-5 and ZX19U-5 are more productive than other brands of mini excavators of this size. Research shows that the cycle time is quicker and workload is greater than previous models. Due to greater hydraulic efficiency, the new Hitachi mini excavators are also capable of higher levels of productivity than previous Zaxis models, using the same amount of fuel.

The versatility of the new ZX17U-5 and ZX19U-5 is highlighted by the expandable crawler tracks. They can be retracted or widened – depending on the requirements of the job site – from 980mm, for working in small spaces or being loaded on to a truck, to 1,280mm for greater stability.

Exceptional comfort

Operator comfort was a key factor in the design of the cab. It features a wide adjustable sliding suspension seat, which is surrounded by user-friendly controls within easy reach. Hydraulic pilot levers are used to operate the front, boom swing, travel and blade.

Noise levels, even with the canopy design, are lower than previous Zaxis models and competitor machines, allowing operators to work more comfortably. Visibility of the job site has also been enhanced by the new three-post canopy design.

Greater durability

Several new and improved features have been incorporated into the ZX17U-5 and ZX19U-5 to enhance their durability. For example, the front of each machine is fitted with a boom cylinder guard and has a new V-shaped boom cylinder cover with two bolts for added durability.

The rubber crawlers have been upgraded and the undercover of the revolving platform frame has been lengthened. The design of both models has changed to a D-frame for added durability.

Easy to maintain

Convenient maintenance features are an integral part of the user-friendly design of the new ZX17U-5 and ZX19U-5. The engine and radiator covers have been redesigned to allow easy access. The tank cover has also been redesigned and more space around the fuel tank opening makes the new mini excavators easier to refuel.

They are also easier to clean than previous models – the back of the blade is slanted and shaped to minimise the build-up of dirt and make it quicker to remove. The layout of the components, such as the engine, pumps and filters, has been purposely designed for easy maintenance.

Joep van den Maagdenberg, Product Specialist at HCME, says: “The design of the new Zaxis-5 mini excavators is based on the concept of user-friendliness, so we believe they are ideal for first-time users of the machine, such as in the rental market, for example.

“The ZX17U-5 and ZX19U-5 will be invaluable additions to any fleet, thanks to their versatility for working on a variety of job sites with different attachments, and impressive comfort and easy maintenance features.”
