Belgium’s government is considering legal action against Caterpillar over the U.S. heavy equipment maker’s decision to shut down a manufacturing site and lay off more than 2,000 workers.
Belgium’s government’s considering legal action against heavy equipment maker Caterpillar. In a surprise announcement last week, Caterpillar said it’s shutting down a manufacturing site in the Wallonia region and shifting work to a plant in France and other facilities outside Europe. As a result, more than two-thousand workers will be laid off…along with thousands more from subcontractors working on Caterpillar contracts. Some learned they’d lose their jobs after reading about it on social media.Prime Minister Charles Michel has told lawmakers they’ll take action if necessary. He calls the expected shutdown “brutal, cruel and heartbreaking.”
