Firefighters say work on the structure — which stood on Ste. Catherine St. near the corner of St. André St. — had been underway for a few days when a supporting wall caved in, bringing the entire building down with it.

No one was injured in the collapse, according to firefighters. Police have sealed off a section of Ste. Catherine St. while city inspectors secure the neighbouring buildings.

City engineers are on site to evaluate the damage, but Martin Guilbault, a spokesperson from the fire department, said no neighbouring buildings were affected by the collapse. He said he expects that stretch of Ste-Catherine St. to be open by Tuesday evening.
