A spider access crawler lift is dangling around 50 storys above a street in Barangaroo, Sydney, following the failure of a roof mounted derrick crane.

Hundreds of people have been evacuated but no one has been injured on the ground, and an exclusion zone is now in place.

Hickson Road, which runs along Barangaroo, has been closed to pedestrians and police are assisting with traffic management.

“They were lowering pieces of machinery and it has sort of collapsed under that load”, he said. It is up 51 floors, ‘ he told The Sydney Morning Herald.

Lend Lease, the developer of Barangaroo, released a statement saying there had been an incident at the site.

“Safety remains our number one priority and engineers are assessing the crane and will advise next steps in due course”.

The incident is believed to have occurred around 2pm today, according to Fairfax Media.

The crane dangling from Barangaroo’s Tower One. A spokesperson from the union said the crane was ‘hanging precariously’.

Tower One has yet to be completed and at this point, is not occupied.
