Terex Port Solutions (TPS) has acquired the assets of the CVS Ferrari terminal tractor product line, which has been part of Manitex International since 2010.
The existing range of terminal tractor models will be further developed and marketed under the Terex brand while CVS will fulfill current supply contracts with its existing customers.
The machines will be manufactured at the Terex site in Lentigione, Italy, which currently manufactures Terex empty and full container handlers in addition to heavy-load forklift trucks.
According to a Terex statement, the move closes “the last big gap” in TPS’s product portfolio, which it describes as the “most comprehensive product range” in the port equipment market.
Steve Filipov, president of Terex’s material handling and port solutions segment, said that the addition of terminal tractors to TPS’s range of handling equipment solutions would help to simplify “business for our customers by trimming the number of manufacturers they deal with to get the equipment they need”.
“By acquiring this product line from another premium manufacturer, it also avoids adding unnecessary new capacity to the global manufacture of these machines,” he added.
Approximately two thirds of larger terminals worldwide currently organise their container handling with rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTG) together with terminal tractors, noted a Terex statement.
Filipov further stated: “With such a large market, it is logical that we want to offer these products. RTG cranes have long been a central component of our portfolio, and these robust terminal tractors are perfect companions.”
TPS will include the diesel-mechanical terminal tractors FYT 230 (4×2; four wheels, two-wheel drive) for container transport from quay to container stackyard, and the FR 270 (4×4; four-wheel drive) for roll-on roll-off (ro-ro) operations, in its global offering.
Whereas CVS focused primarily on Europe and parts of Africa, TPS is hoping to extend the vehicles beyond these markets.
Klaus Peter Hoffmann, vice president and managing director of TPS, said that the machines will be equipped with engines that comply with the EPA Tier 4f (EU Stage IV) emissions standard, “in order to be better equipped for the business in Europe and North America.”
