Crews at the Midlands nuclear plant in South Carolina that’s being expanding have installed the two last heavy-duty components.
Weighing in at a combined 310 tons, the pair of “super modules” were lifted into place South Carolina Electric & Gas said Tuesday.
The pieces are so large and heavy that they could not be made off-site. They were moved with an assist from one of largest cranes in the world — a 560-foot-tall derrick, the utility said.
The larger of the two weighed 250 tons.
The steel modules — the last of six — will make up the walls of a large water-storage tank that will absorb heat and provide back-up cooling for the second of two reactors being added at the V.C. Summer Nuclear Station.
