74 year old Clyde Whirley shipyard crane set to get $500,000 USD makeover in Baltimore

The Baltimore Museum of Industry is doing some restoration  on a WWII era crane that sits at its entrance.

The Bethlehem Steel Key Highway Shipyard Crane at the Baltimore Museum of Industry is a Clyde Whirley Crane was built in 1942. It was installed on Pier 3 of the Bethlehem Steel Shipyard at Key Highway. It is a Whirley model 17 DE 90 and it was used to repair ships damaged during World War II.

A crew with Ace Environmental in Curtis Bay, removed 25 years’ worth of bird droppings — an estimated 500 pounds — from the Baltimore Museum of Industry’s 100-foot-tall shipyard crane last month. The cleanup was part of a $500,000 restoration to the World War II-era crane.
