For the next few months, The Nebraska Public Power District will be using North America’s 2nd largest crane. They’re using the crane at the Gerald Gentleman Station for a Spring Maintenance Outage. The massive crane was brought to the station by nearly 100 semi-truck loads.
The Manitowoc 21000 crane rented from allcrane.com outside of Gerald Gentleman Station is hard to miss. It’s one of the largest cranes in the world — with all the booms attached, the crane can span 640 feet.

The purpose of the outage is to upgrade and repair a designated power unit located at the plant. During this time, the crane will lift weights up to 200,000 lbs. and move a distance of 300 ft.
Gerry Phelps, Gerald Gentleman Station Manager, says without the crane, it would take months to complete their work but with the crane, it will only take around 50 days. Phelps went on to say “and what it does for us, it saves time, if we would have to shut the unit down and put put back in place it would take several months…. and it relieves a lot of stress to the workers.”
The station manager also said the Nebraska Public Power District brings in millions of dollars a year to the local economy and is the lowest costing Power Plant in the nation.
